Catholic Calendar: 24–30 May 2026
Sunday, 24 May 2026 — Pentecost Sunday
Liturgical rank: Solemnity of the Easter Season (red).
Meaning of the day: Pentecost is the fulfilment of Christ’s promise. The Apostles, previously locked behind closed doors out of fear, are filled with power from on high and go out to proclaim the Gospel to all nations. It is the birthday of the missionary Church, a day of courage, unity and a new language of love that crosses the boundaries of fear, division and human weakness.
Quote: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22).
Prayer: Holy Spirit, come into my heart. Set my faith on fire, purify my desires, give me the courage to witness to Christ and teach me to speak the language of love, peace and forgiveness.
Practice: Pray to the Holy Spirit today and ask especially for one gift you need most at this time. Notice whether your words build unity or weaken it.
Saints of the day: The solemnity of Pentecost Sunday takes precedence in the liturgy. The calendar also recalls the Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians and St Vincent of Lérins, priest.
Monday, 25 May 2026 — Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
Liturgical rank: Memorial (white); beginning of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time after the close of the Easter Season.
Meaning of the day: After Pentecost, the Church looks to Mary as Mother of the Church. She stood beneath the Cross when Jesus entrusted the disciple to her maternal care, and she was present with the Apostles in prayer in the Upper Room. This day reminds us that the Church is not only a structure or institution, but a family of disciples led by the Holy Spirit and entrusted to Mary’s motherly protection.
Quote: “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27).
Prayer: Mary, Mother of the Church, teach me to remain close to Christ even when I do not understand everything. Watch over my family, my parish and the whole Church, so that we may remain faithful to the Holy Spirit.
Practice: Pray today for the Church, the Pope, bishops, priests, families and parish communities. You may say one Hail Mary for those who have drifted away from the Church.
Saints of the day: The memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church; the parish calendar also recalls St Bede the Venerable, priest and doctor of the Church, St Gregory VII, pope, and St Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, virgin.
Tuesday, 26 May 2026 — Memorial of St Philip Neri, Priest
Liturgical rank: Obligatory memorial (white).
Meaning of the day: St Philip Neri reminds us that joy is a sign of a heart rooted in God. His holiness was not heavy or distant from people. It was full of simplicity, humour, love for the young and patient care for souls. In the week after Pentecost, his witness shows that the Holy Spirit not only gives courage, but also transforms ordinary life into a place of joy, freedom and goodness.
Quote: “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4).
Prayer: Lord, give me a joy that does not depend on mood or circumstances, but flows from Your presence. Through the intercession of St Philip Neri, teach me simplicity, cheerfulness and kindness toward others.
Practice: Offer one simple gesture of joy today: a kind word, a smile, a call to someone lonely or help for someone who is discouraged. Let your faith become lighter and closer for someone else.
Saints of the day: St Philip Neri, priest, founder of the Oratory, known as the Apostle of Rome and a saint of joyful everyday life.
Wednesday, 27 May 2026 — Wednesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Liturgical rank: Weekday in Ordinary Time (green); optional memorial of St Augustine of Canterbury, bishop, or St Paul VI, pope.
Meaning of the day: After the great days of Pentecost, the Church returns to the green of Ordinary Time. Yet this does not mean a weakening of spiritual intensity. Ordinary Time shows whether the gift of the Holy Spirit truly enters our decisions, relationships, work and way of thinking. St Augustine of Canterbury reminds us of the patient mission of proclaiming the Gospel, while St Paul VI reminds us of the Church’s responsibility for truth, dialogue and witness in the modern world.
Quote: “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” (Mark 10:45).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me not to seek the first place, but a heart ready to serve. May the Holy Spirit help me choose humility where ambition, comparison and the desire for recognition begin to grow.
Practice: Do one thing today without expecting thanks. Pray for missionaries, teachers of the faith, catechists and all who patiently pass the Gospel on to new generations.
Saints of the day: Optional memorial of St Augustine of Canterbury, bishop; in the liturgical tradition of this time, St Paul VI, pope, is also remembered.
Thursday, 28 May 2026 — Feast of Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest
Liturgical rank: Feast (white).
Meaning of the day: The Church contemplates Christ as the Eternal High Priest. Jesus does not offer something external to Himself, but gives Himself to the Father for the salvation of the world. This day is a special call to pray for priests, for new vocations and for the holiness of those who have been appointed servants of the Eucharist, reconciliation and the Word of God. The figure of Stefan Wyszyński reminds us that fidelity to Christ and the Church requires courage, patience and hope stronger than the pressures of history.
Quote: “This is my body, which is given for you” (Luke 22:19).
Prayer: Jesus, Eternal High Priest, sanctify priests, strengthen them in fidelity, protect them from discouragement and loneliness. Give the Church shepherds after Your own Heart.
Practice: Pray today for a particular priest you know. You may offer a decade of the Rosary, a short time of adoration or a simple prayer of gratitude for his ministry.
Saints of the day: Feast of Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest; a day of special prayer for the holiness of priests and for new vocations. The parish calendar also includes: Stefan Wyszyński – Primate of the Millennium, Guardian of Faith and Hope.
Friday, 29 May 2026 — Memorial of St Ursula Ledóchowska, Virgin
Liturgical rank: Obligatory memorial (white); the parish calendar also includes an entry for St Paul VI, pope.
Meaning of the day: St Ursula Ledóchowska shows a holiness that is active, cheerful and deeply practical. Her life reminds us that education, care for the young, social work, service to families and everyday presence beside another person can become a place of deep evangelisation. St Paul VI, in turn, reminds us of a Church called to proclaim the Gospel in the modern world with courage, prudence and fidelity to the truth.
Quote: “Let the children come to me” (Mark 10:14).
Prayer: Lord, through the intercession of St Ursula Ledóchowska, give me a heart sensitive to children, young people, families and those who need support. Through the example of St Paul VI, teach me responsibility for the Church and courageous witness to the faith.
Practice: Pray today for children and young people, teachers, educators, parents and all who work in schools. Offer one concrete gesture of support to someone younger or weaker.
Saints of the day: St Ursula Ledóchowska, virgin; the parish calendar also offers an entry on St Paul VI, pope.
Saturday, 30 May 2026 — Saturday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Liturgical rank: Weekday in Ordinary Time (green); optional memorial of St John Sarkander, priest and martyr, or St Zdislava.
Meaning of the day: Saturday closes the first week after Pentecost and invites us to a quiet examination of the heart. Has the gift of the Holy Spirit remained only a festive memory, or has it begun to order our words, decisions and relationships? St John Sarkander reminds us of fidelity to conscience and to the seal of confession, while St Zdislava of Lemberk points to holiness lived in marriage, family and mercy toward those in need.
Quote: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).
Prayer: Holy Spirit, show me the fruits of this week. Teach me faithfulness in ordinary matters, honesty in speech, patience with those close to me and readiness to forgive.
Practice: In the evening, make a short examination of conscience for the whole week: where did I listen to the Holy Spirit, and where did I return to fear, pride or discouragement? Entrust to God the coming Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity.
Saints of the day: Optional memorial of St John Sarkander, priest and martyr; the parish calendar also leads to the entry on St Zdislava of Lemberk, patroness of families, married couples and works of mercy.
The period of 24–30 May 2026 leads the Church from the fire of Pentecost into the everyday life of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time. It is a week in which Easter joy does not end, but becomes mission: prayer for the Church, priests, families, young people, missionaries and all who need the light of the Holy Spirit in the ordinary decisions of life.

so that it may not end with words,
but become a witness of life.
Teach me to speak the language of love,

and teach me to remain in prayer
when I need light and patience.

teach me to love the Word of God,
the wisdom of the Church
and truth handed down through generations.

strengthen the Church in freedom,
courage and fidelity.
Through St Mary Magdalene de Pazzi,
awaken in me a desire for deeper prayer.

and give the Church shepherds after Your Heart.

teach me a faith that is strong,
patient and faithful in times of trial.
Through St Ursula Ledóchowska,
teach me to serve with cheerfulness,
especially children, young people and those in need.

give the Church wisdom to proclaim the Gospel
in the modern world.
