History, meaning and message

1. What is an antiphon?

Traditionally, an antiphon is a brief refrain or phrase associated with a psalm or another chant. The Roman Missal contains Communion antiphons for different days of the liturgical year.

These texts direct us towards Christ, the Eucharist and the character of the feast. Even when another approved chant is used, the prescribed antiphon can reward private reflection.

2. When should the Communion chant begin?

Paragraph 86 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal explains that the chant begins while the priest receives the Sacrament and accompanies the Communion of the faithful.

It expresses the spiritual union of those receiving Communion, their joy and the communal nature of the procession. It belongs to the prayer of the assembled Church, not to a musical performance.

3. Must the exact Missal text always be sung?

Liturgical norms allow different choices for the Communion chant, subject to the books and regulations in force locally. That is why the practice may differ between parishes.

The music should be appropriate to the sacred action and help reveal its meaning. Choices are not simply a matter of personal taste but form part of responsible liturgical preparation.

4. What happens if there is no singing?

Paragraph 87 of the General Instruction provides for recitation of the Missal antiphon when no chant takes place. A member of the faithful, a group, a reader or, if necessary, the priest may recite it.

This reminds us that the words belong to the Church’s prayer. Even a quiet spoken text can direct attention to the presence of the Lord.

5. How can we listen more deeply?

Before Mass, read the antiphon for the day and notice its links with the Scripture readings. During Communion, join attentively in the singing or listen in prayer.

Afterwards, carry one thought into daily life. The unity we celebrate at the Lord’s table should shape our relationships at home and in the parish.

Did you know?

The General Instruction, paragraph 86, says that the Communion chant expresses the unity of communicants and highlights the communal character of the procession.

A thought for today

The liturgy teaches us through both actions and words, helping us recognise the gift of the Eucharist.

Put it into practice

At your next Mass, notice the Communion chant or antiphon and consider how its text relates to the Gospel.

Continue the journey

When I receive Communion, do I remember that I am part of a community rather than simply having a private experience?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, present in the Eucharist, unite our hearts. Teach us to pray together and to live the love we receive at your table. Amen.
