Did Padre Pio Really Tell People to Send Him Their Guardian Angels?

St. Padre Pio had a profound devotion to his guardian angel. According to accounts from those who knew him, he frequently spoke to his angel, asked for help and encouraged others to do the same.

Accounts from his spiritual children also preserve an extraordinary piece of advice: if someone needed Padre Pio’s prayers but could not visit him personally, he encouraged that person to “send” their guardian angel to him.

This was not magic or a mysterious method of transmitting messages. For Padre Pio, it was above all an expression of deep faith in the spiritual world and in the care God has entrusted to the angels.

That is why this story is more important than an extraordinary anecdote from the life of a famous Capuchin friar. It leads us to a question that concerns every Christian: do we really remember that, according to the teaching of the Church, a guardian angel accompanies us throughout our lives?

✝️ Formation theme: living with an awareness of your guardian angel
Jesus says of the little ones that “their angels in heaven always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). It is a reminder that the visible world is not the whole of the reality created by God.

Padre Pio and his guardian angel

Padre Pio’s spirituality was centred completely on Christ, the Eucharist, prayer, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the offering of suffering to God. Yet there was also a very strong awareness of angels in his spiritual life.

According to the testimony of fellow friars and people who met him, Padre Pio spoke about his guardian angel with remarkable naturalness. He did not regard the angel’s presence as a poetic metaphor.

For him, spiritual reality was living and close.

Accounts from his spiritual children say that he encouraged them: when you need my prayers and cannot come to me personally, turn to your guardian angel.

Did angels really bring people’s intentions to him?

Accounts concerning Padre Pio’s life describe occasions when, during prayer, he appeared to respond to someone who could not be seen.

One friar reportedly heard Padre Pio at night while he was praying the Rosary, quietly saying words such as: “Tell her I will pray for her,” or assuring someone that he would ask Jesus for a particular grace.

People close to Padre Pio interpreted such experiences as part of his special relationship with angels who brought him the intentions of people asking for prayer.

An important distinction: the existence and care of angels belong to the teaching of the Church. Particular stories about Padre Pio’s experiences, however, belong to testimony concerning his personal spiritual life. They are not doctrines that Catholics are required to believe.

What did Jesus say about angels?

Belief in the protection of angels did not begin with Padre Pio. Its roots are found in Sacred Scripture.

In the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Jesus says:

Word of God

“Their angels always behold the face of my Father”

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 18:10).

For centuries, Christians have regarded this passage as one of the biblical foundations for belief in the particular protection of angels over human beings.

An angel does not replace God and possesses no power independent of Him. An angel is a creature who serves the Creator and carries out His will.

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say?

The Catechism speaks very clearly about this reality.

From the beginning of life until death, human life is surrounded by the protection and intercession of angels.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 336, recalls the words of St. Basil: “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.”

This means that devotion to the guardian angel is not something intended only for children.

Our need for our guardian angel does not disappear when we become adults.

The angel’s mission concerns our entire journey towards God.

More than protection from danger

We often think of our guardian angel mainly when asking for safety while travelling or protection from an accident.

That is an important part of prayer, but the angel’s mission is much deeper.

The greatest concern of the guardian angel is not simply our physical safety but our salvation.

We can therefore ask for help when we face temptation, make a difficult decision, struggle with anger, find it hard to forgive or lose our inner peace.

We can simply say: “Guardian Angel, help me choose what is good. Help me see this situation as God sees it.”

What did “send me your angel” mean?

These words should not be understood as though a person could order an angel to do whatever they wished.

In Padre Pio’s spirituality, they expressed trust in Divine Providence and an awareness of the spiritual communion that exists between people.

A person hundreds of miles away from San Giovanni Rotondo could still pray and entrust an intention to God.

Padre Pio reminded people that geographical distance cannot limit prayer.

What we cannot do physically can still be entrusted to God.

Can we do the same today?

Today the situation is different from the time of Padre Pio’s earthly life.

The Church venerates him as a saint, so we can simply ask for his intercession.

We can say:

“St. Padre Pio, pray for me and place before Jesus the intention I carry in my heart.”

At the same time, we can turn to our guardian angel and ask for protection, guidance and help according to God’s will.

There is no contradiction here. The saints intercede for us, while the angels serve God in the mission He has entrusted to them.

Do not search for visions or extraordinary experiences

Stories about Padre Pio fascinate people because his life was associated with many events regarded as extraordinary.

But extraordinary experiences are not the essence of holiness.

We should not attempt to see our guardian angel, hear an angelic voice or search for special signs.

Christian faith is not a pursuit of extraordinary experiences.

Holiness consists above all in union with Christ, prayer, the sacraments, love, forgiveness and daily faithfulness to God.

Image to remember

We do not need to see our guardian angel in order to be under his protection

God’s reality does not become less real simply because it remains invisible to our eyes.

The guardian angel in everyday life

We can remember our guardian angel in very ordinary moments.

Before travelling to work.

Before a difficult conversation.

Before making an important decision.

During temptation.

When we are worried about a child, spouse, parent or friend.

When we are tired and could easily say something we will later regret.

A short prayer is enough:

“My Guardian Angel, guide me. Help me do what is good in the eyes of God.”

The guardian angel while travelling

For generations, Catholics have entrusted their journeys to the protection of the angels.

We can pray before driving, before a long journey, before a flight or when someone we love is travelling far from home.

This does not mean that prayer replaces responsibility.

Asking for the protection of a guardian angel does not remove our duty to drive carefully, follow safety rules, rest when necessary and make sensible decisions.

Faith does not remove responsibility. It helps us live responsibly in the presence of God.

The guardian angel and difficult decisions

There are moments in life when we simply do not know what to do.

They may concern family, work, relationships, health, vocation or major changes in our lives.

We can ask our guardian angel to help us discern.

Not to make the decision for us.

Not to give us a magical sign.

But to help us open our hearts to the light of God.

The angel leads a person towards what is good but does not take away human freedom or responsibility.

Why do we forget our guardian angel so easily?

Perhaps because the angel is invisible.

We live in a world of screens, images, messages, notifications and things that can be seen and measured.

Spiritual reality can therefore easily fade into the background.

Yet every Sunday at Mass we profess faith in God as the Creator of all things visible and invisible.

The angels belong to this invisible world created by God.

What does Padre Pio really teach us?

The extraordinary part of this story is easy to remember: Padre Pio told people to send him their guardian angels.

But that is not the most important part.

What matters most is how deeply Padre Pio lived with an awareness of God’s presence.

Prayer was not simply one activity among many in his day. It was the foundation of his life.

The spiritual world was not a theory. It was part of his everyday faith.

Perhaps the right question is therefore not only: “Did Padre Pio really tell people to send him their guardian angels?” but also: “Do I remember the guardian angel to whose protection God has entrusted me?”

The Guardian Angel Prayer is not only for children

Many adults remember prayers to their guardian angel from childhood but gradually stop returning to them.

Yet adulthood brings situations in which we especially need wisdom, protection and guidance.

We carry responsibility for our families.

We make difficult decisions.

We face temptation, conflict and fear.

We do not always know what to do.

Padre Pio reminds us that we can rediscover the simple prayer that accompanied many of us from childhood.

Today's Takeaway

“Their angels always behold the face of my Father”

Jesus Himself speaks of the angels who watch over us (Matthew 18:10). Padre Pio lived with a remarkable awareness of that reality and encouraged others to turn to their guardian angels often.

Live It Out

Remember your guardian angel today
