St Faustina – Great Mercy Begins With Small Things

The lesson of St Faustina

1. Holiness among ordinary duties

Faustina's life was not composed only of mystical experiences. Most of her days involved ordinary work.

She served in the kitchen, garden and convent entrance and carried out tasks assigned by her superiors.

Her relationship with Christ matured within everyday life.

2. Mercy must become action

Popular devotional stories sometimes describe Faustina sharing food with poor people. Not every anecdote has the same documentary support as events recorded directly in her Diary.

Her spirituality itself, however, is unmistakable: mercy cannot end with beautiful words.

3. Three ways of showing mercy
  • deed – practical assistance,
  • word – forgiveness, encouragement and kindness,
  • prayer – bringing before God those whom we cannot help in another way.
Did you know?

St Faustina performed very ordinary work within her religious community. Her life shows that holiness does not require escaping everyday life – it develops within it.

4. Goodness that nobody sees
“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matthew 6:3).

Not every good action needs an audience. Sometimes one of the purest acts of love is something that nobody notices except God.

Today's Takeaway

Great mercy begins with small acts.

You do not need visions or extraordinary signs to become an instrument of God's love.

Live It Out

Do one good thing for another person today without seeking gratitude and without telling anyone else about it.

Continue the Journey

At the end of the day ask yourself: To whom did I show even a small measure of God's mercy today?

Prayer

Jesus, teach me to be merciful in deed, word and prayer.

Jesus, I trust in You.
