Can Parents Bless Their Children? A Simple Daily Practice

A brief prayer before school, a small cross on a child’s forehead, a blessing at bedtime. Can a mother or father do this, or does every blessing have to come from a priest?

Blessing belongs to family life

The Church explicitly encourages parents to pray for and bless their children. The Catechism teaches that every baptised person is called to be a blessing to others (cf. CCC 1669). That does not mean, however, that every form of blessing is identical.

Some liturgical blessings are reserved to ordained ministers. A parent’s blessing is a prayer arising from love and responsibility, not an attempt to replace the sacraments or the ministry of a priest.

What might the gesture look like?

A parent may gently trace a cross on a child’s forehead and say, “May God bless you and keep you safe.” Another simple prayer is: “Lord, guide my child today and give them wisdom and a kind heart.”

It does not have to take long. Let the blessing be natural, unhurried and appropriate for the child’s age. With older children, it is good to invite their participation rather than force the gesture.

What do children remember?

Children may forget many of our instructions but remember that someone entrusted them to God each morning or evening. A small, repeated blessing can create a language of affection and security.

The blessing is not a guarantee that troubles will never come. Christian prayer does not offer immunity from life’s difficulties; it asks for God’s presence and guidance through them.

Put it into practice

For one week, try ending the day with a short blessing for your child, without a phone or hurry.

Prayer

Lord God, watch over our children. Give them wisdom, courage and people who will help them grow in goodness. Amen.
