What’s in a Name? The Depth and Power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

In the New Testament, names keep their significance but take on even deeper meaning. Jesus, son of Joseph, gave Simon a new name – Peter, meaning “rock,” symbolizing his role in building the Church. Likewise, the name Jesus is not just a label but an expression of His mission and identity.

The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew “Jehoshua” or the shortened “Yeshua,” meaning “Yahweh saves” or “God is salvation.” This is a theophoric name, containing the name of God – Yahweh, showing that in Jesus God Himself comes to save humanity. This name was given by God and was spoken throughout His earthly life.

In Jewish tradition, the name of God – Yahweh – was so sacred it was rarely spoken aloud. Yet Jesus’ name was used daily, as He lived among people, and calling His name was part of daily life. That’s why the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd, which is also the titular feast of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

The name Jesus is no ordinary word. It is a powerful shield in spiritual warfare, a sword against temptation and evil. In prayers like the Litany of the Most Holy Name, approved by Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII, the faithful invoke this Name as a sign of devotion and protection. Many saints breathed their last uttering this name, testifying to its power and significance.

This litany was composed by St. John of Capistrano in the 15th century. Reciting it is not just an act of honor but also reparation for blasphemies and disrespect toward this Name in the world. Every devoted mention of the name Jesus is a precious act of love and spiritual strength.

Today, as we celebrate this feast, we remember that Jesus’ name is not just a word but a source of salvation and power. It is a name we should carry on our lips every day, in prayer and life, for it is alive, full of power, and God’s presence among us.
